Angolan teenager Mauro Manuel loses fight to stay in the Netherlands

An Angolan teenager who arrived in the Netherlands aged 10 has lost his fight to stay in the country despite a heartfelt plea to the Dutch parliament and a wave of protest at his treatment.

Mauro Manuel, now 18, has been living in the Dutch province of Limburg with a foster family since he arrived in the Netherlands as an unaccompanied asylum seeker in 2003. He is facing deportation because he is an adult. Dutch MPs voted down two motions on Tuesday that would have allowed him to stay in the country permanently. They are expected to vote next week on a compromise motion that would allow him to stay to hear whether or not an application for a temporary four-year student visa has been successful.

Accade in Olanda. Nella ex-civilissima Olanda. Nuovamente si ripetono scontri tra gli schieramenti politici sul tema dell'immigrazione. Oggi al centro della discussione politica c'è il caso di Mauro Manuel, richiedente asilo Angolano di 18 anni. La storia di Mauro è quella comune purtroppo a tanti minori stranieri non accompagnati che rischia di essere espulso verso l'Africa pur avendo vissuto in Olanda dall'età di 8 anni. La motivazione data dal servizio immigrazione olandese è che non sussistono reali e fondati motivi per restare nei Paesi Bassi. In base alla legge olandese i minori stranieri non accompagnati una volta che hanno raggiunto la maggiore età possono restare nel paese soltanto se la loro richiesta ottiene il nulla osta da parte dell'ufficio immigrazione, quando non vi è nessuno che può prendersi cura di loro. Unica eccezione è il caso di malati o di coloro che provengono da paesi che potrebbero mettere a rischio la loro incolumità.
