As Amnesty activists arrive to the Greek Island of Lesvos to call for an end to push-backs of refugees’ and migrants’ on their arrival to Greece, researcher Kondylia Gogou meets with unaccompanied children held in local police stations in Lesvos.

Afia (not her real name), 17, has not seen her mum and sister since they were separated by smugglers during their trip to Europe. She has no idea where they are now. She told me that her father was killed in Afghanistan.

Detention of child refugees continues to rise

The detention of children for immigration purposes is continuing to rise, MPs have heard.

In a highly critical report into the work of the now-abolished UK Border Agency (UKBA), the Home Affairs Committee found that 61 children were detained for immigration purposes during the last quarter of 2012, up from 48 during the previous quarter.

MPs did note that the majority of those detained were for short periods of time – during the third quarter of 2012, 59 children left immigration. Of these, 92 per cent had been held for three days or fewer compared to 87 per cent the previous quarter.

Norway child asylum deportation policy measure suspended

Norwegian immigration officials temporarily stop policy towards unaccompanied children seeking asylum.

The policy, which has been practised since 2008, sees that unaccompanied children seeking asylum in Norway are deported to the first European country they requested asylum in.

This practice has now been suspended with all asylum applications from children being considered in Norway, regardless of whether they applied somewhere else first.

"Le storie - prosegue - dei tanti minori soli non accompagnati, talvolta giovanissimi, che incontriamo quotidianamente nelle nostre continue attività di assistenza e supporto sull'Isola, sono segnate da terribili percorsi di fuga dai paesi di origine, detenzioni e violenze di ogni genere, e in ultimo da un viaggio in condizioni precarie, spesso tentato per più volte, e che per alcuni loro fratelli, parenti o amici ha significato la perdita della vita".
