UNICEF decries detention of children in adults’ prisons

THE continued detention of children in conflict with the law in the same prison custodies with adult criminals in Taraba State as well as in other parts of the country has become a source of worry to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

  The leadership of the D-Field office of the international organisation which Sunday in  Jalingo, Taraba State  inaugurated the state chapter of the Child Protection Network (CPN), also  decried the state government’s delay in implementing the Child Rights Law that had been passed into law by the State House of Assembly.

Unaccompanied Minors Deported To Mexico By The Thousands

U.S. immigration authorities apprehended 13,454 unaccompanied Mexican minors last year, the majority of whom were swiftly deported to their home country, news site Animal Político reported last week. 

The figures, provided by Mexican consulates in U.S. border cities and submitted to the country’s lower house of Congress last month, highlight the increasingly common problem in the United States of unaccompanied minors crossing the border illegally.

Mineurs isolés : Arthuis «hors la loi» pour France terre d'asile

Un arrêté en date du 24 juillet, et dont l'AFP a obtenu copie, signé par le sénateur, indique qu'il est «mis fin à tout nouvel accueil de jeunes étrangers isolés par le service de l'aide sociale à l'enfance» sur le territoire de la Mayenne.  Une telle décision, écrit FTA sur son site, «contrevient à la mission du département qui doit prendre en charge les mineurs privés temporairement ou définitivement de la protection de leur famille, et ce, sans condition de nationalité». En signant un arrêté qui «met fin à tout nouvel accueil de jeunes mineurs étrangers isolés» sur le territoire de la Mayenne, Jean Arthuis (UDI), le président du conseil général de ce département, s'est attiré les foudres de France terre d'asile (FTA). Si l'ancien ministre de Jacques Chirac ou d'Alain Juppé voit là une adresse au gouvernement contre un nouveau protocole d'accueil des mineurs isolés étrangers, l'association dénonce une «mesure indiscutablement discriminatoire».

End the immigration detention of kids

A coalition of human rights’ group specialising on child issues has urged the Malaysian government to stop the arrest and detention of children by the immigration authorities.

In a press statement today, the group, Child Rights Coalition Malaysia (CRCM) also expressed their concern over the large-scale immigration crackdowns which are set to take place next month as announced by the Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi earlier this week.

“Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Hussein Haniff is demanding the release of Palestinian children in Israel’s detention centres and we commend his efforts.
