Immigrant Children Detained in Greece Generates Protests

The Ecologist Greens party today condemned the detention of nine Afghan children at an immigrant detention center in the Greek island of Lesbos.
In a statement, the group recalls this action violates the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child since children should not be treated as offenders of the law but as beneficiaries of protection.

However, the children have been detained for approximately 24 days.

According to police authorities, the group should be transferred to mainland Greece because the island's immigrant child protection center is not functioning.

Nowadays, undocumented immigrants and refugees remain detained in police facilities waiting for their administrative deportation process, which could last from six to 18 months.

The organization recalled that between 2009 and 2012, Greece was sentenced by the European Court of Human Rights for violating the European Convention in eleven cases related to the detention of refugees and immigrants at detention facilities.
