Thousands of people fleeing poverty and turmoil in the Middle East, Africa and southern Asia are stepping across Greece's muddy boundary with Turkey each month. The trend is testing government resources, fueling support for ultranationalist groups in blighted urban areas and raising tensions between Athens and the European Union.

In ihrer Heimat herrscht Krieg oder solch schlimme Lebensbedingungen, dass manch einer keinen anderen Ausweg mehr finden kann. Jedes Jahr stranden unbegleitete, minderjährige Flüchtlinge aus Ländern der ganzen Welt auf Flughäfen und Bahnhöfen des Landes, ohne Visum, ohne Pass und oftmals ohne Perspektive. Allein in Gießen waren es 22 in diesem Jahr.

The number of children detained while attempting to cross into the United States without an adult has increased dramatically in the past seven months.


In recent years, the U.S. Department of Human Services’ Division of Unaccompanied Children’s Services has cared for as many as 8,000 children annually. In the first three months of this year, however, the agency has seen a 77 percent increase in the number of children in the program.
