Nel suo ultimo rapporto annuale, pubblicato recentemente, l’organo anti-tratta del Consiglio d’Europa, il GRETA (Gruppo di esperti sulla lotta contro la tratta degli esseri umani), esorta tutti i paesi del continente a intensificare la lotta per contrastare questo fenomeno.“La tratta degli esseri umani è una tragedia europea. Il rapporto odierno mostra che donne, uomini e minori sono vittime di abusi sessuali, di sfruttamento lavorativo o sono costretti a compiere attività criminali ovunque nel nostro continente”, ha dichiarato il Segretario generale del Consiglio d’Europa, Thorbjørn Jagland.

„Ich kenne das Haus von Kindesbeinen, ich habe hier Konfirmandenunterricht gehabt, ich habe die Hochzeit meiner Schwester hier gefeiert“, sagt Marianne Habedank, „ich kenne das Haus vom Keller bis zum Dach“. Mit der neuen Nutzung des Lebrechthauses, des ehemaligen evangelischen Pfarrhauses in Groß-Zimmern, ist Habedank sehr zufrieden. „Es war ja mal im Gespräch, dass hier ein Kindergarten hinein soll, aber das wäre nichts gewesen, so ist das Haus viel besser genutzt“, sagt Karl-Heinz Habedank, der mit seiner Frau in der Nachbarschaft wohnt.

Vengono dal Ghana, dal Mali, Sudan, Nigeria, Costa d’Avorio, Etiopia, Ciad, Burkina Faso, Pakistan, Bangladesh e Somalia. Sono tutti fuggiti “a forza” dalla Libia. Sono uomini e donne e minori sbarcati tra la primavera e l’estate dello scorso anno a Lampedusa e ancora molti di loro aspettano di vedere riconosciuto il loro status di rifugiati. Vivono nel timore di essere ricacciati indietro verso le violenze da cui sono scappati. Sono poco più di ventimila i profughi giunti l’anno scorso in Italia che hanno fatto domanda di protezione internazionale e che sono stati accolti all’interno del piano della cosiddetta emergenza Nord Africa.

The High Court has ruled that the failure to consider the continued detention of a mentally ill failed asylum seeker in accordance with immigration policy rendered his detention unlawful in part.
The Claimant applied for asylum based upon his account of an attack during the Rwandan genocide and subsequent events.  The Home Secretary refused the application and the Claimant appealed.  At the appeal he was unrepresented and he adduced no medical evidence.  The Immigration Judge dismissed his appeal, disbelieving the entirety of his account. Once his appeal rights had been exhausted (that is, he was unable to appeal any further through the courts), the Secretary of State detained him on 19 October 2010 for the purpose of removal.
