Kent County Council is set to take the Home Office to court in a bid to recover millions of pounds it is spending looking after young asylum seekers who should no longer be in the UK.
The prospect of legal action in the High Court comes amid concerns the county council is out of pocket when it comes to looking after those who have been told to leave after unsuccessfully appealing to stay in the country.
Social services support about 117 young adults who are over the age of 18 and have been classified as having exhausted all rights to remain in the country.

Eric Ciotti (UMP), président du conseil général des Alpes-Maritimes, a annoncé aujourd'hui qu'il n'accueillerait plus de mineurs étrangers délinquants au Foyer de l'enfance géré par le département.

Le secrétaire national de l'UMP en charge des questions de sécurité menace d'étendre cette disposition à tous les mineurs isolés étrangers à partir du 1er juillet s'il n'obtient pas d'aides de l'Etat.

Eric Ciotti invoque la surpopulation dans les 14 sites du Foyer de l'enfancedu département, dont la mission est d'accueillir en urgence tout mineur de 3 à 18 ans.

Le Foyer de l'enfance compte actuellement "224 mineurs alors que sa capacité d'accueil, qui correspond aux besoins des familles du département, est de 183 places", a-t-il dit lors d'une conférence de presse.

Two million children are trapped in Syria, innocent victims of a bloody conflict which has already killed 70,000, according to a report by London-based international charity Save the Children released on Wednesday.

Illness, malnutrition, grave traumas and precocious marriages for little girls are a constant risk in Syria, the report "Childhood under fire" said. Save the Children stressed the devastating impact of the two-year conflict on children who have a hard time finding food, with dozens of thousands forced to live in barns, parks or caves with no sanitation systems. Many don't go to school as their teachers have fled. In a country where 90% of children attended school, over 2,000 schools have been destroyed or severely damaged while others are used as shelters. Fuel prices have gone up 500% and the coldest winter days have forced many to burn school desks for heat in a vicious circle which damages the future of Syrian children.
