Large numbers of teenage refugees are still being routinely locked up, two years after the Coalition Government promised to end the detention of asylum-seeking children, a report today discloses.

The Refugee Council condemns the treatment of these “forgotten children” – youngsters who arrive alone without travel documents and are treated as adults – as a scandal.

A report by the Refugee Council to be published this week accuses the immigration service of continuing to detain child asylum seekers by wrongly classifying them as adults.
The report, Not a Minor Offence, has been welcomed by other groups working with refugees and asylum seekers who are growing increasingly concerned by the numbers of age dispute cases. Last year one child spent almost three months locked up before it was finally accepted that he was not an adult.

I joined a leaving care team in children's services in June 2009 and the majority of my caseload are refugees: young people whose childhood was disrupted by manmade emergencies to such an extent they were placed in harm's way and sought protection in the UK.
The team supports looked-after children and care leavers from the age of 16 to 21, or if in education up to the age of 25. We support refugee and asylum-seeking children and young people that have been referred by the UK Border Agency through a rota system.

Appel à occuper la mission Mineurs Isolés Etrangers du Conseil général d'Ille-et-Vilaine.

La mission se trouve dans l'espace Anne de Bretagne au 15 rue Martenot.
D. est congolais. Comme le précise son extrait d’acte de naissance, il est né début 1995. Il a 17 ans. Depuis plusieurs années, ses parents ont disparu après avoir participé à une manifestation de l’opposition au régime de Kabila. 
D. a été recueilli par son oncle, militant d’opposition, mais celui-ci a été interpellé fin 2011 si bien que D. a lui-même été recherché par la police congolaise pour avoir caché des documents appartenant à cet oncle. 
Après avoir été accueilli plusieurs mois au Congo-Brazzaville, le 22 avril 2012, D. a été aidé pour fuir en Europe. Il est arrivé à Rennes le 23 avril 2012.
